Clay County is located in northeast Florida and is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It has a total area of 644 square miles, with 601 square miles of land and 43 square miles (6.7%) of water. Clay County is bordered by Duval County to the north, St. Johns County to the east, Putnam County to the south, and Bradford County to the west.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Clay County had a population of 221,135. The racial makeup was 80.9% White, 10.4% Black or African American, 3.6% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 4.6% from other races or two or more races. Additionally, 9.3% were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
