Alachua County is situated in north central Florida between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The county seat and largest city is Gainesville. It shares borders with Columbia, Union, and Bradford counties to the north; Levy and Marion counties to the south; Putnam County to the east; and Gilchrist County to the west. The county spans a total area of 969 square miles, of which 874 square miles are land and 95 square miles are water. 

Demographics 

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Alachua County has a population of 278,518. The racial composition of the county is 69.6% White, 20.3% Black or African American, 5.35% Asian, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% from other races, and 2.64% from two or more races. Females make up 51.6% of the population.

Alachua County experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in July is around 92°F, while the average low in January is 45°F. Due to its location, the county is susceptible to hurricanes, tropical storms, and flooding. Notable hurricanes that have affected Alachua County include Hurricane Dora in 1964, Hurricane Frances in 2004, and Hurricane Irma in 2017, which led to extensive power outages and flooding.
