Hillsborough County is located in west-central Florida, on the Gulf coast. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The county has a total area of 1,266 square miles, with 1,020 square miles of land and 246 square miles (19.4%) of water. It is bordered by Pasco County to the north, Polk County to the east, Manatee County to the south, and Pinellas County to the west, with the Gulf of Mexico along its western coastline. 

Demographics 

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Hillsborough County had a population of 1,459,762, making it the fourth most populous county in Florida. The racial makeup was 52.6% White, 16.3% Black or African American, 4.9% Asian, 0.5% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 25.6% from other races or two or more races. Additionally, 30.9% were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The 2024 population estimate for Hillsborough County is 1,557,655, with a growth rate of 1.44% from 2023.

Major hurricanes that have impacted Hillsborough include Hurricane Donna in 1960, Hurricane Elena in 1985, Hurricane Frances in 2004, and Hurricane Irma in 2017, which caused widespread damage and power outages.
