Madison County is located in the Florida Panhandle region of the state. It has a total area of 716 square miles, with 696 square miles of land and 20 square miles (2.8%) of water. Madison County is bordered by Georgia to the north, Hamilton County to the east, Suwannee and Lafayette counties to the south, and Jefferson and Taylor counties to the west.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Madison County had a population of 18,493. The racial makeup was 57.4% White, 39.2% Black or African American, 3.0% Hispanic or Latino, and 0.4% from other races or two or more races. The 2022 estimated population was 18,400.
