Polk County is located in central Florida, part of the Lakeland-Winter Haven metropolitan area. It has a total area of 2,011 square miles, with 1,798 square miles of land and 213 square miles (10.6%) of water. Polk County is bordered by Osceola County to the east, Hardee and Manatee counties to the southwest, Hillsborough County to the west, and Lake, Sumter, and Orange counties to the north. 

Demographics 

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Polk County had a population of 725,046. The racial makeup was 70.8% White, 16.4% Black or African American, 1.5% Asian, 0.6% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 10.6% from other races or two or more races. Additionally, 24.9% were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The 2024 estimated population for Polk County is 848,278, with a growth rate of 3.66% since 2020.

The county was severely impacted by Hurricane Charley in 2004, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane near Cayo Costa, producing catastrophic wind damage across Polk County.
