St. Johns County is located in the northeastern part of Florida. It has a total area of 822 square miles, with 601 square miles of land and 221 square miles (26.9%) of water. St. Johns County is bordered by Duval County to the north and west, Flagler County to the south, and Putnam County to the southwest. Its eastern border is the Atlantic Ocean.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, St. Johns County had a population of 273,425. The racial makeup was 87.6% White, 5.5% Black or African American, 1.5% Asian, 0.3% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 5.0% from other races or two or more races. Additionally, 8.9% were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
